Travel Further — A Flexible Journey Extension Experience

Metro journeys are usually planned around a fixed destination, but real-life plans don't always go as expected. A passenger might need to visit another station, meet someone, or travel further than originally planned. When this happens, continuing the journey can involve additional steps and create unnecessary friction.

Travel Further is a conceptual UX design project that explores how passengers could extend their existing Chennai Metro journey through the Chennai One QR ticketing experience, without having to start the ticket-booking process all over again.

The goal was to make journey changes feel simpler while keeping the experience aligned with the existing QR-based ticketing ecosystem. Rather than replicating international tap-in/tap-out systems such as Singapore's SimplyGo, I explored a more incremental approach that builds on the current destination-based ticketing model.

I began by studying existing metro ticketing experiences and conducting an exploratory survey with 35 metro users to understand how unexpected travel changes affect passengers. I then organised the research findings through affinity mapping to identify common behaviours, needs, and opportunities for improvement.

These insights shaped the Travel Further concept, which allows passengers to select an eligible new destination from their active ticket, review the updated fare, and pay only the additional amount required. When the updated destination falls within the same fare amount, the concept allows the ticket to be updated without additional payment.

Beyond the interface, I explored the user flow, information architecture, fare calculation logic, and edge cases such as payment failure, ticket expiry, and destination restrictions.

This project helped me understand that meaningful UX improvements don't always require rebuilding an entire system. Sometimes, the opportunity lies in making an existing experience more flexible, transparent, and responsive to the way people actually travel.

Note: Travel Further is a conceptual design proposal and is not an officially implemented Chennai One feature.
